exhibitions and posters and glitches



I've not been writing here this week as I've been rushed off my feet with a new term starting with endless paperwork, computer hiccups and glitches and an exhibition to get ready for next week.



I designed us a lovely contemporary poster in Publisher and now the computer with that on won't talk to the printer - this elderly computer doesn't have publisher and copying and pasting resulted in lots of zzz's and asterisks and gobbledygook :( so the poster is very boring and ordinary - and wasted lots of hours of painting time attempting to sort it out :(



We all paint very differently - Sue M's work is very abstract and often based on her visits to Florida. Sue G paints solely at the coast. Mary does fascinating work from old photographs, doing a lot of research into the backgrounds of the people she paints - maids, children in a spartan Victorian 'blind school' - she had a studio for a time in the building that had been the school - her work always has an interesting story behind it. Ros has a background in lingerie design and her recent work has featured knitting, both in actuality and painted - beautiful pieces. Maggie does lovely moody landscapes and has a particular love of dusk. Glen's work is about places that have a deep meaning to her, known over a long period of time, particularly the Charnwood Forest and Guernsey. Judith Eason is doing a series on the woodlands of Kent, her home.



I'll be showing a mix of seascapes and the flowers - the canal/river/waterways stuff is for a later time. I may also show the Harlequin abstracts.

The show goes up next Sunday and our private view is on the Monday.

So nice to see a post from you! Good luck on the openign of your show. Too bad about the lost time on the computer. Maddening GRRRR. Do you think there will be a link for the show?

I would love to see this show - I like the way you talk about the differences between each artist's paintings.

Sorry to hear about the computer - it is incredible to realise how much time is lost trying to sort things through.

Take lots of pictures so we can see the show vicariously!!

Vivien Blackburn's work in the Urban/Rural show We've just hung a group show at the The Eye Project, Urban/Rural show.  If you want to come and see it it's on for a month - well worth seeing, 11 lovely artists and some fabulous work. Those large canvasses are 40 inches square. There are rural landscapes, flowerscapes, intriguing textile work including a large knitted building, abstracts .... something for everyone. Hedges silhouetted agains the snow, winter light: watercolour and Derwent tinted charcoal pencils in Stillmand and Birn Beta Hardback sketchbook

 Detail  I have always liked the calligraphic tangle of the hedges when they are sihouetted against the sky.   Recent snowfall meant even more opportunities with amazing light and the landscape simplified and hidden by the snow, throwing hedges into relief. Above is a detail of a double page sketch in the lovely Stillman and Birn Beta A4 hardback sketchbook.  This paper is so forgiving and the watercolour works beautifully with it.  It allowed me to work through wet washes with charcoal pencil - something that tears many papers, leaving holes.  Some of the hedge is paint, some tinted charcoal. looking at non traditional composition and quiet vs busy areas in paintings

Paul Klee I thought I'd look at non-traditional composition - where the rule of thirds isn't the key but the painting relies on different compositional methods. in response to an excellent series of posts on the various ways of looking at composition by Katherine (link at end). These alternative considerations or breaking of rules - but making it work - appeal to me more than too heavy a reliance on the rule of thirds. The painting above, by Paul Klee is a 'field' painting' - the composition is overall, the eye travels around enjoying the glowing colour that he creates by juxtaposing complementary colours, subtle greyed greens enhancing the oranges/reds/pinks. Most of the image is composed of the various greens, greeny browns and khakis, with accents of the warm colours. When working this way it's important that the balance is unequal and that the accent colours are placed carefully to keep the eye moving in the way the artist wants. A couple of the brighter
